On 16 December 2025, BioAgora, together with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV), convened a stakeholder dialogue event titled “Designing the Future Science Service for Biodiversity Together”. The event took place at DG ENV in Brussels and brought together stakeholders from across the biodiversity science-policy-society interface to reflect on expectations, added value and future pathways for the Science Service for Biodiversity.

The event was organised at a key moment for EU biodiversity policy, as the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Regulation, and related initiatives increase the demand for coordinated, trusted and policy-relevant biodiversity knowledge. The dialogue provided a dedicated space to explore how the Science Service for Biodiversity can best respond to these evolving needs.

From reflection to co-creation

The programme combined structured input with interactive discussion formats. Participants reflected on:

  • where the Science Service for Biodiversity currently stands,
  • how Knowledge Exchange Networks support responses to policy needs, and
  • what would encourage stakeholders to engage with, contribute to, and use the Science Service.

In the afternoon, interactive breakout discussions allowed participants to share perspectives on how the Science Service could be further strengthened, including its functions, usability and connection to policy processes. These exchanges helped translate reflections into concrete ideas for improvement and future engagement.

Strengthening the science-policy-society interface

Across the day, discussions highlighted the importance of:

  • clear value propositions for different user groups,
  • alignment with policy cycles and decision-making needs, and
  • inclusive and transparent processes that connect science, policy and practice.

The event underlined the role of the Science Service for Biodiversity as part of a wider system of science-policy mechanisms, supporting evidence-informed policymaking while remaining responsive to stakeholder expectations.

Towards the future

The insights gathered during the stakeholder dialogue will inform the next steps in the development of the Science Service for Biodiversity under BioAgora. The event also reinforced the value of continued dialogue and co-creation in shaping a service that is trusted, relevant and fit to support EU biodiversity and nature restoration objectives.
