About Scenarios and modelling KEN
The Scenarios and Modelling Knowledge Exchange Network focuses on new advances in scenario building as well as modelling biodiversity and ecosystem services in support of biodiversity policies. With scenarios and models, one can explore the future consequences not only of policy commitments stemming from the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, the Marine Action Plan and the Common Agricultural Policy (among others), but also of future developments in the long term that go beyond the time frame of these policies.
Some examples of questions considered in this context:
- How effective is the protection of 30% of land and sea areas in preserving biodiversity under increasing climate change?
- What are the long-term consequences that the sustainable intensification of agriculture spells out for biodiversity and food security in the EU and beyond?
The Network thus builds on various global and European scenarios and modelling networks (such as the BES-SIM initiative and IPBES Task Force), aiming to develop a topical nexus in Europe to strengthen capacity-building and feedback into policy frameworks.
The objectives of the Network:
- bringing together the scenario and modelling community
- creating links between IPBES and EU-funded projects
- organising information on biodiversity scenarios for policy-makers and other interested stakeholders
