About Protected areas and coherent networks KEN

To halt the loss of biodiversity, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 emphasiсes the creation of a coherent Trans-European Nature Network, linking protected areas through ecological corridors to support nature’s recovery. However, the realisation of the 30x30 target (i.e. at least 30% of the land and 30% of the sea should be protected in the EU by 2030, of which 10% strictly protected) will require complementary conservation measures beyond protected areas. These include the implementation of OECMs and upscaling of landscape restoration aligned with NRR.

Both IPBES and IPCC highlight the need for multifunctional “scape” approaches that embed different landscape values into decision-making to halt and reverse continued land degradation. The Knowledge Exchange Network for Protected Areas and Coherent Nature Networks is dedicated to advancing the scape approach, demonstrating that biodiversity recovery and human production/consumption can be effectively reconciled at regional scales.
